How McDowell Never Threw In The Towel And Walked Away The Worthy Winner

I know I’m a few days late to the party, but let me be the first umpteenth person to congratulate Graeme McDowell with a doff of the cap. A U.S. Open win, and with it the privilege of joining a truly elite list of players to have hoisted the trophy at Pebble Beach. Nice work if you can get it, eh?

Sure, a Dustin Johnson win would have bagged me rather nifty £410, but the genuine sense of elation that I felt as GMac sank the winning putt more than made up for the small fortune I lost. Honest.

As for Dustin’s calamitous collapse? Well, the less said about it the better.

Sadly, not everyone seemed to greet Graeme’s win with the same enthusiasm, or at least the ‘manner’ in which it happened.

If certain Yank journalists are to be believed, the Ulsterman’s victory was more to do with Tiger, Phil and Ernie’s poor performances on Sunday as opposed to his bona fide talents and proven track record as player. Hey, do you guys want some cheese and crackers to go with those sour grapes?

It’s not his fault the big guns couldn’t get their asses into gear when it really mattered. Truth is, GMac had played enough staunch golf to allow himself a few errors on Sunday. What more can you do in a U.S. Open?

Anyway, let me redirect the spotlight back onto our deserved champ. There’s no reason why he can’t make it back-to-back Majors at St Andrews in July.

For anybody interested, you can follow Graeme McDowell (and Gregory Havret for that matter) on the European Tour every week.

Check it out sometime. You’ll be surprised how good these guys really are…

Big thanks to Robert Matre for taking what has to be my favourite shot of the year. Bigger thanks still for letting me use it. For more of Rob’s flicks from Pebble as well as his other work, go to www.RobertMatre.com. Like, now!
